My Natural Hair Journey: Progress | October 2018
My natural hair has always been misunderstood, even by myself and the best thing I could do was to keep it short or shaved. Chemical relaxers were always out for me because, they weren’t just painful, but they were also pointless. My hair refused to get processed enough to be “silky” but I always suffered the chemical burns on my scalp. Any-who, long story, short… I took the time to learn about and understand my hair better. It’s sometimes still a mystery but I think my relationship with my hair is so much better now! This current natural hair journey started in January 2016 (I chopped it all off in December 2015), so I’m obviously a slow grower on top of the incredible power of shrinkage I seem to possess…but, you work with what you have, right?
Things I don’t do:
1. I don’t comb or brush my hair
2. I don’t keep it away from moisture, in fact I mist it as often as I need (if not more)
3. I don’t use oil moisturizers, I use water because oil DO NOT moisturize, they seal
4. I don’t use chemicals
5. I don’t keep damaged ends, because they’ll eventually cause more breakage than the little length they’re worth
Currently my hair regimen is moisture-intense, with some aryvedic herb infusions here and there. I still use natural, safe and good ingredients no matter how frustrating and long the process of caring for my natural hair is! I do protective style as often as possible, but I cannot do tiny mini twists anymore, the longer my hair gets, the more it coils up on itself…and breaks. I often do medium or large braids but I was too lazy on my last washday, and I came up with this…
My edges are still recovering but they’re looking much better
I still use only shampoo with a African Black Soap base and my leave-in conditioner is still moisture-intensive, with aloe vera. I still use a shea butter based hair butter with essential oil, and other awesome oils like castor, olive or coconut oil. My hair mist is also very moisturizing, with little to no oils for better absorption, then seal that in with oils/butter.

My curl pattern is completely different and even though my high porosity hair still dries out, it no longer out of control… I see a huge improvement.
Until next time,
